My computer won't turn on. No fan, no nothing when I push the button.

It's a PowerPC MacPro. about 4 years old.

Gimme ideas on what's wrong and how I go about fixing it. GO.

Did you do the internal reset? I had that happen with my Tower. Scared the bejesus out of me. Opened it up... unplugged everything. Pushed the reset button. Held my breath. And it turned back on.

Other than that... power supply? fuse?

gozer?

Is the RAM seated properly? We've got some G5's in a lab we're using in my classroom that can be finicky. One wouldn't start up at all and got the "three flashes" on the power button light but was a happy camper when I'd popped the case and reseated the RAM.

Also, I'll second Zammy's suggestion to do the internal reset of the power management unit (PMU) on the logic board. It's a button down where the RAM is as well. That happened on one of the above G5's as well.

Other than that, it might be an actual hardware futz.

I never owned G5 tower but damn if the things don't seem finicky compared to my MacBook. Of course these probably get neglected and abused like hell as college lab computers.

Advice I got from engineers: check the plug first. After that, what goaty and zammy said.

Did you hear about the bathrooms in the engineering department, back in 1930? They had three doors; white, colored, and gaussian.

Poor Canada. They could have had British government, American know-how, and French culture. Instead, they got French government, British know-how, and American culture.

Lemme know if you get it figured out without too much drama.

We have one misbehaving in the lab now too.

If I plug the thing in, the fan comes on and such but it doesn't seem to boot or send a signal to the monitor or anything. The power light up front doesn't light up at all and holding the power button down doesn't force a shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to unplug.

Sad

We had a G5 MacPro go down at work a couple of weeks ago.

The power supply sent crapped out and sent a shitload of juice out and fried the logic board.

Hope yours didn't do the same,

The power supply on my machine is in a compartment underneath the guts of the computer. So, it's contained and shouldn't do that. But, it makes it problematic to repair because apparently, I have to take everything out of the machine in order to access it. Then, replace the power supply, reassemble it and hope that fixes it and that I didn't mess up anything else in the process.

Sucks, but it sounds like your power supply is pooched.

Well, I replaced the power supply, and that didn't have any effect. Same result. I was about to give up on it, but since my Dad was over for Thanksgiving, I thought I'd let him take a look at it. He took it apart, put it back together, hit the power button and.... *fwong*. It works.

Confused I guess it needed some Dad mojo.

Too bad I'm late, as usually it just needs a CUDA reset on the motherboard. It's a wee white button. I've seen that a few times.

Just increasing my post count and all.
